AFM Local 592 — the Tri-County Federation of Musicians — represents working musicians across Washington, Westmoreland, Fayette, and Greene Counties in southwestern Pennsylvania. We are part of the American Federation of Musicians, the largest musicians' union in the world.

AFM negotiates minimum pay scales and contract protections so you get paid what your talent is worth — on every gig, every session, every performance.
The AFM-Employers' Pension Fund holds over $1.8 billion in assets and pays millions in retirement benefits each year. Members also collect ongoing royalty income through SoundExchange, the Film Musicians Secondary Markets Fund, and the Sound Recording Special Payments Fund.

The Tri-County Federation of Musicians, AFM Local 592, was formed in 1912. It was originally called the Charleroi Musical Society, until a merger of locals from Canonsburg, Charleroi, and Washington brought musicians across the region together under one chartered local.
The local was founded in a moment of profound change for working musicians. When the AFM itself formed in 1896, every note of music heard in public was played live. Just one year later, in 1897, the player piano was invented — the first time a live musician could be replaced by a machine. From phonographs to streaming to AI, every new technology since has been met by musicians standing together, and Local 592 has been part of that fight for over a century.
Local 592's jurisdiction now includes all of Fayette and Washington Counties, along with Monessen, North Belle Vernon, Pricedale, Smithton, Sutersville, and West Newton and Rostraver, Sewickley, and South Huntingdon Townships in Westmoreland County, and Rices Landing, Jefferson, Carmichaels, Cumberland, Greene, Greensboro, Waynesburg, and the Township of Dunkard including Bobtown and Newton Site in Greene County.
Since its inception, the professional musicians of Local 592 have provided music for thousands of concerts, dances, live shows, and countless other events throughout the Tri-County area.
The objectives of the Tri-County Federation of Musicians are:
To unite the instrumentalists and leaders of the music profession in their interests.
To establish a minimum rate of compensation for their services.
To enforce good faith and fair dealings amongst the members and their patrons.
To promote the importance of live music by presenting free performances to the public — especially in areas where many might not otherwise hear live bands and appreciate their talents.
